Tammis Groft appointed Executive Director of Albany Institute

ALBANY, NY- In a special meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Albany Institute of History & Art, held on June 17, 2013, Tammis K. Groft was appointed Executive Director of the Albany Insitute. The decision to appoint Groft was unanimously approved by the 37 member Board of Trustees and Associates of the Albany Institute. George R. Hearst III, Chairman of the Board stated: "Tammis has led the Institute to a new level of vigor. Her leadership has set a brisk tempo, featuring more programs, more visitors and more members. She has bright, visionary ideas, is committed and decisive, and has developed an energetic leadership team that can move forward in the best traditions of this institution."

Summer Art Programs for Children

ALBANY, NY- The Albany Institute of History & Art presents a series of summer art programs exhibiting various themes and mediums which appeal to a wide array of children in the area. Guests are encouraged to apply what they learn about the history and art on display at the museum to their own one of a kind works of art throughout the summer. “Every summer we look forward to seeing the children of our region explore their creativity and learn about art while enriching their knowledge about our shared history,” says Erika Sanger, Director of Education.

Hudson Valley Hops 2013

ALBANY, NY- The Albany Institute of History & Art will be hosting its second annual Hudson Valley Hops on Saturday, April 20, 2013 from 4-7pm. It will be a celebration of the history of brewing Albany and today's craft beer industry in and around the Hudson Valley. Guests can sample the finest local craft beers, engage with experts in the field, enjoy an assortment of food and tour the museum galleries. Tickets are $25, and the first 100 people to RSVP and prepay will receive a commemorative Hudson Valley Hops tasting glass.

GE Presents: The Mystery of the Albany Mummies Project Team

Discover the teams of people working to uncover the mysteries of the Albany mummies! From scholars and Albany Institute of History & Art staff to documentary film makers and staff at Albany Medial Center, there are a lot of great minds on this project!

Spend School Vacation at AIHA for a 3D Adventure!

ALBANY, NY- Children ages 6 to 12 are invited to spend their week off from school on a Mixed Media Adventure at the Albany Instititute of History & Art! This three-day Vacation Art Break will spark creativity and excitement in your kids. It will take place Tuesday, February 19- Thursday, February 21 from 9AM to noon.

TRAVELING EXHIBIT The Legacy of Currier & Ives: Shaping the American Spirit

ALBANY, NY- The Albany Institute of History & Art opens a new exhibition, The Legacy of Currier & Ives: Shaping the American Spirit. The show will run from February 9, 2013- June 15, 2013 and will display over 60 hand-colored lithographs which include a stunning array of visual references to an exciting period in national development. An illustrated catalog accompanies the exhibition and is available in the museum shop. This exhibition is organized by the D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, MA.

NEW EXHIBITION The Making of The Hudson River School: More Than the Eye Beholds Exhibition

ALBANY, NY- Albany Institute of History & Art opens a new exhibition, The Making of the Hudson River School: More than the Eye Beholds, which will be on view from January 26-August 18, 2013. The Albany Institute's new exhibition on the Hudson River School brings together 120 works from private collections and the museum's holdings. On view in this exhibition will be one of Thomas Cole' early works, View of Featherstonhaugh Estate Near Duanesburg, which has rarely been exhibited in public venues. Other rarely seen paintings from private collections include works by Christopher Pearse Cranch, Alfred Thompson Bricher, Ernest Parton, and John Frederick Kensett.

ELIZABETH COVART REVEALS NEW PERSPECTIVE ON ALBANY’S EVOLUTION AT AIHA MARCH 11

AIHA OFFERS A FIRST, FREE LOOK AT NEW “ST. PETER’S CHURCH” EXHIBITION

ALBANY, NY– Visitors to the Albany Institute of History & Art on Friday, March 2 from 5–8 PM can enjoy a FREE sneak peek at the museum’s newest exhibition, St. Peter’s Church: 300 Years of History & Art before it’s officially opening on March 3. The event is in association with Albany’s 1st Friday art walk, showcasing the thriving and lively art scene in downtown Albany. The show, running through April 29, will examine the role St. Peter’s Church has played in shaping Albany and the upper Hudson Valley.

AIHA NAMED ERIE CANALWAY HERITAGE PARTNER

ALBANY, NY—The Albany Institute of History & Art has been selected by the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission as one of four new heritage sites to join its Erie Canalway Partner Program, which offers technical assistance, coordinated tourism promotion, and networking opportunities for selected sites within the Corridor. With these additions, the program now includes 29 canal-related museums and cultural heritage sites.

HAROLD HOLZER TO LECTURE AND PRESENT NEW BOOK AT AIHA ON FEBRUARY 26

ALBANY, NY– Renowned Abraham Lincoln Scholar Harold Holzer will be visiting the Albany Institute of History & Art to present the lecture “Lincoln and New York” on Sunday, February 26 at 2 PM. Following the lecture, listeners will have a pre-publication date opportunity to purchase and receive a signed copy of Holzer’s newest book, Emancipating Lincoln.

ALBANY INSTITUTE CELEBRATES 221 YEARS WITH $2.21 ADMISSION

ALBANY, NY– The Albany Institute of History & Art is celebrating its 221st anniversary by offering a reduced admission fee of $2.21 to all patrons visiting on February 22, 2012. As one of the oldest museums in the United States, the Albany Institute of History & Art was founded in 1791, during the presidency of George Washington. This makes it older than the Louvre, the Smithsonian, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

AIHA TO KICK OFF ST. PETER’S CHURCH LECTURE SERIES FEBRUARY 12

ALBANY, NY– The Albany Institute of History & Art will be presenting the first of a three lecture series “300 Years, One Congregation”, about St. Peter’s Church on Sunday, February 12 at 2 PM. In this first lecture “In One City of Two Cultures, Ministering to Three Nations” the history, purpose, and influence of St. Peter’s Church in Albany will be explored by a panel of experts, including the Reverend Paul Hartt, Rector, Ms. E. Connie Powell, Church Archivist and Mr. Chris Grill, Mentor at Empire State College. This event is FREE with museum admission.

ALBANY, NY– On Sunday, January 29 at 2 PM the Albany Institute of History & Art will welcome Dr. Eric Ruijssenaars to tell the enthralling life story of Abraham Staats, a Dutch Founding Father of Albany. Dr. Ruijssenaars is a Senior Scholar in Residence at the New Netherland Institute, and possesses his own Bureau of Historical Research, named Dutch Archives (www.dutcharchives.com).
