Albany Institute of History & Art Welcomes New Director of Education

ALBANY, NY—The Albany Institute of History & Art has a new Director of Education: Maria Vann.

Maria Vann was the former Director/Chief Curator of the Maritime Museum at Battleship Cove. Vann has worked for institutions including the Iroquois Indian Museum, New York State Historical Association, Fenimore Art Museum, and as an adjunct history professor at SUNY College at Oneonta.

The Albany Institute’s Executive Director Tammis Groft was happy to make the appointment: “Maria brings a wealth of experience to the museum, including ‘best practices’ in museum education, knowledge of New York State history, and strong interests in American art.” 

“I am thrilled to begin work at the Albany Institute of History & Art because of its rich legacy and service to diverse audiences that fosters real connections for visitors to and from the Capital Region,” says Vann. “As a museum educator, I am committed to providing an environment where each visitor can make new and sometimes reflective personal connections and I am excited to support this museum as a community focused site for deep learning and fun.”

2017 Exhibition by Artists of the Mohawk Hudson Region Award Winners Announced

ALBANY, NY— The 2017 Exhibition by Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region is now open at the Albany Institute of History & Art in Albany, New York. It showcases 87 works by 32 artists who live within a 100-mile radius of Albany or Glens Falls, as well as a selection of previous Albany Institute of History & Art Purchase Prize winners to give visitors a sense of the annual exhibition’s legacy. This spring, 268 artists working within a 100-mile radius of the Capital District and Glens Falls submitted over 600 new works for consideration in the exhibition and the finalists were selected by this year’s juror, Jack Shear. Shear, a photographer, curator, and the President of the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation brings a long standing commitment to contemporary artists and a strong appreciation of history to this year’s exhibition. His selection of artists reflects his personal vision of a vibrant and thriving art community in this region and he has created opportunities to see in-depth views of each artist’s vision and process. The galleries reflect themes such as nature, photography, sculpture, and abstract figuration.

Curator from the National Gallery of Art to Speak on 19th Century Landscape Photography

ALBANY, NY—On Sunday, April 30 at 2pm, Diane Waggoner will give a special lecture on 19th century landscape photography at the Albany Institute of History & Art. Waggoner is Curator of 19th-Century Photographs at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. This talk highlights one of the types of photography currently on view in the exhibition Captured Moments: 170 Years of Photography from the Albany Institute. This lecture is open to the public and included with museum admission.

Sixth Annual Hudson Valley Hops Fundraiser Celebrates Bicentennial of Erie Canal

ALBANY, NY— On Saturday, April 8 from 4PM—7PM, the Albany Institute of History & Art will host the sixth annual Hudson Valley Hops. This fun, regional craft beer tasting event is a fundraiser for the museum and is sponsored by TimesUnion.com/TableHopping. It’s an opportunity for the community to sample the flavors of Capital Region craft brewers, see brewing and distilling artifacts from the Albany Institute’s collection, meet industry experts, and receive a commemorative glass. This year, the fundraiser will toast the bicentennial of the groundbreaking of the original Erie Canal with an Irish Red Ale invitational, an IPA contest, special music, and more. Multimedia Art Installation by International Artist Explores Changing Meaning of Wampum

ALBANY, NY— On March 4, the contemporary art exhibition Wampum World: An Art Installation by Renée Ridgway opens at the Albany Institute of History & Art. This multimedia exhibition is an artist’s interpretation of the meaning of wampum from culture to culture and time period to time period. It combines video installations and the artist’s watercolors and collage works with objects that the artist has selected from the museum’s collection of Dutch colonial materials. The exhibition will run from March 4—June 18, 2017. Please note that no physical wampum is displayed in this exhibition.

Collaboration Brings Traveling Exhibition from The Schomburg Center to Albany

ALBANY, NY— The Albany Institute of History & Art is partnering with the African American Cultural Center of the Capital Region, Inc. (AACCCR), the Capital District Black Chamber of Commerce, and the JAFJR Community Foundation to host a traveling panel exhibition created and curated by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at The New York Public Library. This panel exhibition will be displayed in a public space on the third floor atrium of the Albany Institute of History & Art from February 11-March 26, 2017. There will be no admission fee to see this exhibition. 

Rock & Roll Photography Exhibition Closes with Special Concert by School of Rock

ALBANY, NY— Students from the School of Rock will be at the Albany Institute of History & Art for a special concert on Sunday, February 12, 2017, the last day of the exhibition Rock & Roll Icons: Photographs by Patrick Harbron. They will honor the photography of Patrick Harbron with a performance that highlights some of the many musical acts he has photographed over his illustrious career. The concert will be at 2pm and is free and open to the public. Standard admission rates will be in effect to visit the galleries.

Have a Rockin' Friday Night at the Museum

ALBANY, NY— The Albany Institute of History & Art invites families to a free, family-friendly rock and roll event at the museum on Friday, February 3, 2017 from 5-8pm. Rock Out! is perfect for all ages and is inspired by the current exhibition Rock & Roll Icons: Photographs by Patrick Harbron. This event is free and open to the public.

Percussion Workshop Invites Families to Make Music at Museum

ALBANY, NY— The Albany Institute of History & Art invites families to a special workshop “Introduction to the World of Percussion and Rhythm” at the museum on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at 1pm. Percussionist Brian Melick will lead participants in an exciting exploration of over 40 different types of drums. Visitors will learn about the history of percussion instruments and how they vary around the world.

Magical Miniature Scenes by Award-Winning Hudson Valley Author-Illustrator on View at Albany Institute of History & Art

ALBANY, NY—Ten miniature dioramas by the award-willing children’s book author/illustrator Joan Steiner (1943-2010) are on view in the exhibit I Spy with My Little Eye: Joan Steiner’s Look-Alikes ® at the Albany Institute of History & Art through January 2017. These meticulously crafted scenes were created from everyday objects and edible treats, and photographed for Steiner’s Look-Alikes ® books, which have been translated into sixteen languages and have sold over a million copies worldwide.

This year, the free admission weekend is once again packed with festive activities that will appeal to the entire family.

Special Night to Commemorate 50th Anniversary of Election of Daniel Button

ALBANY, NEW YORK— In 1966, Daniel E. Button (November 1, 1917-March 7, 2009) did the political impossible and beat the Democratic Machine in a bid for Albany’s Congressional seat. Now, fifty years later, the historic victory is the focus of a special night of activities at the Albany Institute of History & Art. In conjunction with the Times Union, on Wednesday, November 9 from 5:30-7:30pm, the Albany Institute will have a small reception, display a pop-up exhibition called “Dan Button: Victory!”, and host guests who will reflect on this anniversary, including author William Kennedy. This event is free to attend but requires advance registration.

New Photography Exhibition Focuses on Classic Rock Legends

ALBANY, NEW YORK— Hudson Valley and New York City resident Patrick Harbron began his career photographing the luminaries of rock and roll. Rock and Roll Icons: Photographs by Patrick Harbron is an exhibition taken from Harbron’s body of concert and portrait photography of influential musicians and groups of the 1970’s and 1980’s, captured at pivotal moments in their careers. Over 70 prints are paired with the artist’s personal collection of concert posters, tickets, press passes, collectibles, and camera equipment. In addition, a selection of important guitars are on loan from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The exhibition is on view at the Albany Institute of History & Art from November 5, 2016— February 12, 2017. Major sponsorship is provided by Bank of America.

The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Design

ALBANY, NY—The Albany Institute of History & Art in Albany, New York is pleased to announce The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Design, on view from October 1 through December 31, 2016.

Most chairs encountered throughout the day define themselves fairly simply—a place at the family table, a comfortable spot with a great view of the river, a seat of corporate power. When looking at the 43 chairs selected for The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Design, however, there is much more to see than simple pieces of furniture. Developed by the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville and organized for tour by International Arts & Artists, Washington, D.C, these works of art have compelling stories to tell about our national history, the evolution of American design and incredible artistry and craftsmanship.

Exhibition Offers Rare View of Delicate Paper Collections

ALBANY, NY— The Albany Institute of History & Art continues celebrating its 225th anniversary with the new exhibition, Masterworks: Paper, on view through October 16.  This exhibition showcases more than 150 rarely seen items from the Albany Institute’s library and museum collections that span more than three centuries. Sharing in common the medium of paper and close ties to Albany and the Capital Region, the objects in Masterworks: Paper illustrate diverse and eclectic themes, and tell stories that represent the personal and intimate as well as the historical and panoramic.

New Exhibition Highlights Alexander Hamilton's Albany Connections

ALBANY, NY— One of the Founding Fathers of the United States, Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804) was a brilliant politician-lawyer who served as an indispensable aide to George Washington during and after the American Revolution. Among his many achievements, Hamilton is credited with creating the financial system of the United States, and was the first Secretary of the U.S. Treasury. The current Broadway musical sensation Hamilton has sparked an interest in the man on the $10 bill. The Albany Institute of History & Art’s new exhibition, Spotlight: Alexander Hamilton, highlights Hamilton’s connections to Albany, New York through personal papers, family heirlooms, historic preservation efforts, and a stunning portrait painted by Albany’s own Ezra Ames (1768—1836). This exhibition draws from the Albany Institute’s collection as well as from Union College Permanent Collection; John G. Waite Associates, Architects; and Fort Ticonderoga. The exhibition runs from June 22 through December 31, 2016.

America's First Christmas Card on View at Albany Institute of History & Art

ALBANY, NY— This Christmas season, be sure to come to the Albany Institute of History & Art to see America’s first commercially printed Christmas card. Printed in Albany around 1850, the card is on loan to the Albany Institute from the Manchester Metropolitan University Special Collections in England as part of The Capital Region in 50 Objects exhibition. This is the only known copy of the card to survive and this is the first time the card has been on view in the United States.

Albany Institute to Host Mummy Birthday

ALBANY, NY—The Albany Institute of History & Art invites families in the Capital Region to celebrate the 106th anniversary of the arrival of the Albany Institute’s mummies by coming to the museum for a day of fun! Families will sample delicious birthday treats, learn about the mummification process, and discover fascinating stories about Ancient Egypt. In addition, there will also be face painting! This event will take place on Sunday, November 8, 2015 from 12–4:30PM and is free with museum admission. 

Albany Institute to Host William Kennedy & Michael Oatman for Discussion About Creativity

ALBANY, NY—The Albany Institute of History & Art is pleased to host William Kennedy and Michael Oatman for a discussion “About Creativity” on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at 2pm. Kennedy, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and Oatman, an artist, curator, and professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, are highly regarded for their creativity and their contributions to the Capital Region’s rich art and literary environment. Kennedy and Oatman will talk about the creative process and how they have used the Capital Region as inspiration and basis for their work. This program is free and open to the public. Tickets for seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis on October 18. 

Albany Institute to Host Free Reading & Discussion Series about Abraham Lincoln

ALBANY, NY— The Albany Institute of History & Art is excited to host a reading and discussion series that will explore the rhetoric, political skill, and moral transformation of the United States’ sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln on the Civil War: Selected Speeches is a six-part weekly series that will meet at the Albany Institute of History & Art on Thursday evenings at 6PM from October 15 through November 19, 2015. This series is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

New Exhibition Explores Capital Region History Through 50 Objects

ALBANY, NY—It’s not often that you see a video game and a chamber pot together in an exhibition. It’s even more unusual when both are highlighted as historic artifacts. But the Capital Region of New York has such a varied history that this pairing, along with forty-eight other items, will come together at the Albany Institute of History & Art to tell their stories in The Capital Region in 50 Objects. This collaborative exhibition was developed in partnership with area historic organizations and public input. The Capital Region in 50 Objects will open at the Albany Institute on September 19, 2015 and will run through April 3, 2016.

Anaglyph Exhibition to Open at Albany Institute of History & Art on August 15

ALBANY, NY—Audience is central to Eric Egas’ work with anaglyphs. Anaglyphs, which are three-dimensional stereoscopic images, trick the eye into seeing depth with 3D glasses. Egas’ compositions coax onlookers to participate and enter into spaces created by his oversized printed photographs. His focus on anaglyphs evolved from his work with installations that enclosed the viewer within multiple changing images to evoke imaginary worlds between dream and memory. Seeing Double: The Anaglyphs of Eric Egas is his first anaglyph exhibition of this size in the United States. Seeing Double will open at the Albany Institute of History & Art on August 15, 2015 and will run through October 25, 2015.

Albany Institute to Host Free Lecture on 'Van Gogh and Nature'

ALBANY, NY—The Albany Institute of History & Art is pleased to host the annual Clark Art Institute Lecture on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at 6PM. This program is a popular and long-standing summer tradition at the museum. It is free and open to the public as part of the Albany Institute’s free evening hours, which are held each Thursday from 5-8PM. Traditionally, this lecture has been very popular, so attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure a seat.

Online Exhibition Provides Access and Context to Famous Hudson River School Movement

ALBANY, NY— “What is the Hudson River School?” is the frequently asked question that prompted the Albany Institute of History & Art to present the exhibition The Making of the Hudson River School: More than the Eye Beholds in 2013. Popular with Capital Region residents and tourists alike, the exhibition featured 96 works from the Albany Institute’s collection of Hudson River School paintings, drawings, prints, and historical documents, along with 38 works from several private collections that had not been shown before in a public exhibition. This exhibition, which highlights such a key component of New York State’s history and the history of American art, has been digitized and is now available as the museum’s first online exhibition, bringing the story of the Hudson River School to greater audiences.

Albany Institute to Host Author Bruce Dearstyne to Talk About The Spirit of New York

ALBANY, NEW YORK— The Albany Institute of History & Art is pleased to host historian Dr. Bruce W. Dearstyne for a lecture and book signing on Sunday, June 7 at 2PM for his recently published book The Spirit of New York: Defining Events in the Empire State’s History. This lecture is open to the public and is free with museum admission. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
