Lecture by Greene County Historian Jonathan Palmer: Catskill Mountain House
Join Greene County Historian Jonathan Palmer for an illustrated talk celebrating the story of the Catskill Mountain House.
Learn about the famous hotel that shaped how America saw itself, from its unlikely origins in the early 1820s to its tragic decline in the mid-20th century. On the 200th anniversary of its construction, attendees will get to contemplate what the Mountain House represented, who it represented, and how the phenomenon it started continues to shape our relationship to the natural world.
Jonathan Palmer has served as Greene County Historian since 2020 and Archivist for the County of Ulster since 2023. He is a 2012 graduate of Columbia-Greene Community College, Siena Class of 2014, and holds an MSIS from the University at Albany.
The lecture is free with museum admission, no registration required.
