Albany Institute of History and Art (125 Washington Ave, Albany, NY 12210)
LECTURE | A Human-Like Voice within a Cloak of Colorful Plumage: The Allure of the Parrot in Western Art
Inspired by the current exhibition, Sign of the Rabbit, which features parrots in addition to bunnies and other creatures, Dr. Cohn’s talk will survey how artists over the centuries have depicted members of the parrot family, from symbols of Judeo-Christian heritage to simple decorative objects to stand-ins for human subjects.
A practicing veterinarian in Albany for 26 years, Doug Cohn has shared his home with a cockatoo companion for the past 37 years. He has been involved with the Albany Institute since 1998 as a volunteer, donor, and trustee, and currently chairs the museum’s Collections Committee.
