Asher B. Durand was the master among American line engravers. He produced most of his prints after the designs of other artists, but this composition was his own design. Musidora, representing the ideal of beauty, stands in a woodland glade about to step into a pond, stopped as though she heard an intruder. This engraving helped establish him as one of the country's top engravers and remains to this day one of the most important American fine-art prints of the early nineteenth century.
