Comments:
Eleventh Governor of New York State from 1833 to 1838, William Marcy later became secretary of war under President James K. Polk, a post he held from 1845 until 1849. In 1853, President Franklin Pierce appointed him as secretary of state, in which role he helped negotiate the Gadsden Purchase.
