Decorative Arts

AIHA collections highlighted here include silver, ceramics, glass, cast iron stoves and clothing.  The Albany Institute is the nation's chief repository of Albany-made silver.

The silver collection exhibits strong regional characteristics influenced by Dutch material culture and includes forms such as tankards, mugs, salts, brandy bowls and funeral spoons.

Among the rarest pieces in the ceramics collection are the 17th century Dutch utility ware.  Other highlights include numerous examples of Chinese Export porcelain made for area families; English pottery with regional views made for the American market; excellent examples of Albany-made stoneware and redware; and French and English porcelains.  The glass collection includes excellent examples of glass made at various New York State glass houses, and Albany-made flasks.

Other decorative arts highlights include a world-renowned collection of cast-iron stoves, and clothing and textiles made or owned in the Upper Hudson Valley.
