This lithograph, one of two works by Ellsworth Kelly in the Albany Institute's collection, is an example from a series of 28 drawings and prints Kelly produced from 1964-1966 using botanical forms abstracted to pure line.  String Bean Leaves II is one of the most succinct of Kelly's plant drawings, using only nine lines to depict the triumvirate grouping of leaves.

Ellsworth Kelly is an internationally renowned painter, sculptor and graphic artist who has lived in the Capital Region of New York since 1970.  He is knwn for his large-scale paintings and sculptures of succinct, abstract shapes and intense colors.  Kelly's works are in major public and private collections worldwide and have been exhibited extensively in the U.S. and Europe, including major retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art (1973), the Whitney Museum of American Art (1982-93) and the National Gallery of Art (1992-93).
