Volunteers are an essential part of the Albany Institute of History & Art. We offer volunteering options in every department of the Institute., with opportunities to engage with our audiences in the galleries or from the admission desk, assist in the offices or library, or support the museum's special events. Volunteers are a critical part of making the Institute meet its mission and goals. There are opportunities for short-term and long-term volunteering throughout the various departments: Education, Visitor Services, Development, and Marketing.

Docents

Albany Institute of History & Art will begin to offer a robust docent program. This program will include training and continued education for all members of this team. Docents will be the lead educators in the galleries and for all our visitors. They will conduct tours of the permanent collections and special exhibitions, along with leading programs for pre-k to twelfth grade students, college students, adults, and family programs. All docents will participate in regular training sessions that cover curator tours of new exhibitions to best practices of giving a tour.

Training will start in the Spring of 2025. Applications will close March 20, 2025.

Internships

Albany Institute of History & Art offers internships geared towards creating opportunities in the museum field for the next generation of museum professionals. You will work with experienced museum professionals and develop skills that will be invaluable to your career. Schedule will vary depending on department. We are currently open to summer internship applicants.
